The caged butterfly

The other day I noticed a caterpillar that had fallen into our exhaust fan on the RV. I briefly thought about his situation and how he was going to get out of there and I hoped he would move before we relocated so he wouldn’t be trapped and die. My thought at the time was that I didn’t want a dead bug up there that I had to look at.

The other day I noticed a caterpillar that had fallen into our exhaust fan on the RV. I briefly thought about his situation and how he was going to get out of there and I hoped he would move before we relocated so he wouldn’t be trapped and die. My thought at the time was that I didn’t want a dead but up there that I had to look at.

This morning I looked up to see if it was still there and as I did Holy Spirit spoke to me about his situation. That little caterpillar was doing everything right. He was eating his leaves, staying out of trouble, avoiding being eaten, etc. But one day a wind blew and knocked him off his tree. At first it seemed like he had escaped death. He didn’t fall too far and wasn’t injured. In fact he could have continued his little caterpillar life. He could have spun his cocoon right where he had landed. He could have waited out his time and turned into a beautiful butterfly.

However, if he had done so he would have done everything right but he would still be trapped and with the exhaust closed he would have died right there where he was. It wasn’t his fault. He did everything he was supposed to do but one circumstance beyond his control would have killed him nonetheless.

It reminded me that sometimes we can do everything right and yet something beyond our control changes our lives drastically and keeps us trapped. Sometimes it isn’t our fault and there is nothing we can do to change the situation except wait for divine intervention.

I looked for my little caterpillar this morning and couldn’t find him. I will keep checking. He could be hidden by the other parts of the exhaust fan. However, if I look up one day and see a butterfly trapped in the exhaust I will crank open the lid and hope that he can fly out of there. At least I can change his destiny even if I cannot change my own.
